Festive season jugaad: 15 last-minute bag and shoe fixes

The Upcycle Story · Andheri West, Mumbai · 25 October 2026 · 4 min read

Diwali, weddings, parties: the festive season is here, and your bag or shoes look tired. Fifteen jugaad fixes that work in minutes, from our workshop bench.

15 jugaad fixes that work

  1. Shine in a minute: a dab of Vaseline. Petroleum jelly on a soft cloth, spread thin and even over smooth leather or patent, then buff off. Instant glow on bags and shoes. Not on suede, nubuck or untreated leather like Louis Vuitton Vachetta: it darkens them. Test a hidden spot first.
  2. Light scuff on a smooth leather shoe? The same dab of Vaseline, rubbed in small circles, makes most light scuffs disappear.
  3. Dirty white rubber soles: a melamine sponge (the white “magic eraser”), barely damp. On rubber only, never on the leather.
  4. Tired suede: brush it one way with a soft dry brush, or a clean toothbrush, to lift the nap. A plain pencil eraser takes off small marks. No water.
  5. Sticky zip: rub the teeth with a pencil tip (the graphite) or a candle, then run the zip a few times.
  6. Bag lost its shape: stuff it with tissue or a rolled towel and leave it overnight.
  7. Dull hardware: buff with a dry microfibre cloth. No metal polish: it stains the leather around it.
  8. Patent smudges: a slightly damp cloth, then a touch of Vaseline buffed off for the shine.
  9. Shoes that smell: a spoon of baking soda inside, overnight. Tap it out in the morning.
  10. Loose thread: never pull it. Snip it close, and get the seam checked before it opens.
  11. Squeaky shoes: a pinch of talcum powder under the insole.
  12. Yellowish white soles: plain white toothpaste (not gel) on an old toothbrush, then wipe. Rubber only.
  13. Lint and dust on a fabric bag: cello tape wrapped round your fingers, sticky side out.
  14. Loose screw on hardware, or a fraying thread end: one dot of clear nail polish to hold it. Keep it off the leather.
  15. Scuffed edge on a black shoe: a black permanent marker hides it for the evening. Matching colour only, never on suede.
Never, even in a hurry
  • Quick-fix glue: it hardens the top layer and then pulls it off the surface
  • Shoe polish on a bag: it rubs off on your clothes
  • A hair dryer on wet leather: it cracks as it dries

When a trick is not enough

Deep scuffs, peeling edges, faded colour or mould need the real fix: a clean, a colour touch-up or new edges. Our work takes 8–10 days, so book early in the festive season. Pickup is free anywhere in Mumbai.

Questions

Is Vaseline safe on leather?

On smooth, finished leather and patent, a thin layer buffed off is fine for a quick shine. Not on suede, nubuck or untreated leather like Louis Vuitton Vachetta handles: it darkens them. Test on a hidden spot first.

Can I use shoe polish on my handbag?

No. Polish is made for shoes; on a bag it rubs off onto clothes and builds up on the finish.

What if the trick does not work?

Then it needs a proper fix: a clean, a colour touch-up or new edges. Send us photos on WhatsApp.
