Pebbled leather takes recolour well. A tired Coach bag often looks new again after a clean, a recolour and new edges.
Before you try anything at home
Never use quick-fix glue. Superglue-type glue hardens the top layer of the bag and then pulls it clean off the surface. It turns a small repair into a big one.
Never stick peeling edge colour back down. It will lift again. Once edge colour starts coming off, the edge has to be stripped and rebuilt properly, in layers, so it stays.
Never rub or scrub fungus. Rubbing spreads it and damages the material. Mould needs a proper anti-fungal treatment, then cleaning and conditioning.
No heat, no strong solvents on coated canvas or coated leather. The thin coating can lift or crack, and once it lets go the panel can open up.
Never wash a jute bag with its handles on. White and off-white jute is glued inside. Water pulls the glue through and the bag dries dirtier, and the leather or PVC handles soak up water they cannot take. Handles come off first, then the jute is cleaned.
No household cleaners or alcohol wipes. They strip colour and dry the leather out. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and let us do the rest.
Fight the damp. A dehumidifier in the cupboard works well. Or silica gel packets on the shelf, outside the bag, never stuffed inside it.
Store it upright, in its dust bag. Stuff it lightly with tissue so it keeps its shape. Never hang it by the handles.
Let it breathe. Not in a plastic cover, and not shut away for months. Take it out now and then.
Keep chains and hardware wrapped. So they do not press marks into the leather.
Empty it before storing. Pens, receipts and make-up leave marks that set in.
When a bag is beyond repair
