Peeling edge paint: why sticking it back never lasts

The Upcycle Story · Andheri West, Mumbai · 25 October 2026 · 3 min read

The coloured line along every cut edge is the first thing to go on a bag. And the most common mistake is trying to stick it back.

Why sticking it back fails

How a proper edge is done

  1. All the old coat comes off.
  2. The edge is sanded smooth and straight.
  3. New colour goes on in thin layers, each dried and sanded before the next.
  4. Matched to the bag as it is today, then sealed and burnished.
Jugaad for one evening only: a matching permanent marker hides a small chip on a dark edge. It is a hide, not a fix: no glue, no nail polish on the edge.

Questions

How long does a rebuilt edge last?

Years with normal use, because it is built in layers and sealed, not painted on top.

Can you match my bag’s edge colour?

Yes, to the bag as it is now, which is what looks right.

Is edge work done on its own?

Often with a clean or a recolour, so the whole bag looks even.
