Suede and water do not mix: how to look after suede

The Upcycle Story · Andheri West, Mumbai · 25 October 2026 · 3 min read

Suede has one golden rule: keep it dry. Everything else is technique.

Why water is the enemy

Jugaad that works

  1. Caught in the rain? Blot, do not rub, with a dry cloth. Stuff with tissue, dry in the shade away from heat, then brush.
  2. Oil or ghee stain? Cover it with cornflour or talc at once and leave it overnight. It draws the oil out. Brush it off in the morning.
  3. Small marks? A plain pencil eraser, rubbed gently.
  4. Flat, tired nap? Brush one way with a soft brush or a clean toothbrush.
  5. New suede? A suede protector spray before the first wear.
Suede cleaning is all technique. At home: no water, no soap, no hair dryer. A deep clean needs the right method, which is why it costs more than leather.

Questions

Can water stains on suede be removed?

Usually, yes, with a controlled clean of the whole panel so it dries even. Spot-wetting at home makes a bigger ring.

Can suede be recoloured?

Yes, with dyes made for suede that keep the nap soft.

How do I store suede?

Dry, in a breathable bag, with silica gel on the shelf. Never in plastic.
