Why do Louis Vuitton handles turn dark?
The Upcycle Story · Andheri West, Mumbai · 25 October 2026 · 3 min read
The pale handles on a new Louis Vuitton are Vachetta: natural leather with no protective finish. That is why they change.
What darkens them
- Light and air. Untreated leather slowly turns honey, then brown. This is patina.
- Your hands. Hand cream, sanitiser and skin oils soak straight in.
- Water. A single raindrop leaves a dark spot.
- “Shine” tricks. Vaseline and oils that are fine on other leather darken Vachetta at once.
What we can do
- Clean and even it out. Dirt, grime and many water spots lift, and the tone evens.
- New edges. Cracked edge paint on the handles is stripped and rebuilt.
- Remake the handles. If you want them pale again, new handles are made in matching natural leather.
Patina cannot be cleaned away. Age-darkening is in the leather itself. Cleaning removes dirt; it does not turn honey back to cream.

Questions
Can darkened Vachetta be made light again?
Dirt and stains lift; the age patina does not. For pale handles again, they are remade.
How do I slow the darkening?
Clean, dry hands; no creams before carrying it; keep it out of the rain; store it in its dust bag.
Are remade handles original Louis Vuitton parts?
No. They are made by us in matching leather. We are an independent restoration studio.
